People were shocked recently when they read about a baby boy being born in Brazil with a human tail—at least, that’s what the news headlines are calling it.
Although the baby was born prematurely, there were, thankfully, no complications with the birth. But doctors quickly realized the baby was jaundiced and had a “human tail” with a ball at the end of it. According to a recent Fox News article, this “real human tail” was successfully removed at Albert Sabin Children’s Hospital in Fortaleza, Brazil.
But was what this baby had a “real human tail”? The phrase itself sounds like something you would find in an evolutionary biology class. The article goes on to say:
“Around the fourth week of gestation, most of us start to grow a tail while in the womb, but it usually disappears by the eighth week, eventually morphing into the tailbone, otherwise known as the coccyx.”
The phrase “tail” isn’t exactly accurate here. Instead, this “tail” is an important part of the coccyx, where the muscles will attach later in development, explains Answers in Genesis founder Ken Ham.
But that’s not exactly how evolutionists see it. Instead, according to the article, “It is thought our ancestors originally had some form of a tail, but we evolved as a species over time without the need for the organ, so we no longer grow them.”
Is that true? Not quite.
So What Is a ‘Human Tail’?
As unborn babies develop in the womb, the end of the spine sticks out noticeably in the early stages of development. To be clear, this isn’t a tail at all. It will never become a tail. And as the baby’s body continues to grow muscles and limbs, that portion of the spine is covered.
So why are some babies still born with these “tails”? Well, because we live in a fallen world, sometimes abnormalities in the development process cause birth defects, such as a baby being born with an extra bit of flesh sticking out near the tailbone.
Keep in mind, though, that even in these cases, the abnormality is not a true tail, and it’s certainly not some evolutionary leftover.
As Dr. David Menton points out, every single animal tail is an extension of the vertebrate that also has muscles to help move the tail. Human tails don’t have this. Instead, they are often composed of adipose (body fat), connective tissue, muscle, nerve fibers, and blood vessels. They don’t contain bone, cartilage, or any of the spinal cord.
And yet evolutionists still view “human tails” as “vestigial organs.” These organs supposedly are useless leftovers from our ancient ancestors. This attitude is even extended to the coccyx itself, Dr. Menton explains:
“Evolutionists are dead certain that the coccyx is a vestige of a tail left over from our monkey-like ancestors. In fact, the coccyx has some very important functions. Several muscles converge from the ring-like arrangement of the pelvic (hip) bones to anchor on the coccyx, forming a bowl-shaped muscular floor of the pelvis called the pelvic diaphragm. The incurved coccyx with its attached pelvic diaphragm keeps the many organs in our abdominal cavity from literally falling through between our legs. Some of the pelvic diaphragm muscles are also important in controlling the elimination of waste from our body through the rectum.”
The human body—every part of it—is a wonderfully complex creation. We aren’t the product of chance and evolution. Our heavenly Father designed us with incredible care, precision, and purpose.
Human Evolution or Purposeful Creation?
Did God use evolution to create mankind? At Answers TV, you can learn how God purposefully designed us inside and out! Our in-depth videos offer training in apologetics, Bible study, and more.
Dr. Terry Mortenson explains why we should view the idea of human evolution not as scientific fact but rather as a grand illusion. We don’t need to try to squeeze it into Scripture. Instead, we can fully trust what the Bible teaches about creation and human history.
In this episode of CT Scan, Patricia Engler reveals the truth about vestigial organs. Evolutionists point to the appendix, the tailbone, and wisdom teeth as body parts that have little to no use because they’re simply left over from our ancient ancestors. But let’s think through these claims and analyze them from a biblical perspective.
