Discovery of New Planet Throws a Wrench in Evolutionary Science

discovery of new planet

Scientists recently discovered a brand-new world. But it wasn’t quite what they expected.

The European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope caught sight of a new planet in the Centaurus constellation. The planet is 325 light-years away from Earth, is about 10 times heavier than Jupiter, and resides in a binary star system (meaning it has two stars).

What’s so strange about this newly discovered planet? Well, it orbits b Centauri, the “hottest planet-hosting system that we know of,” says one BGR article. This system is extremely hot and massive, and it emits high-energy radiation. Scientists say this should make it nearly impossible for any planet to form.

And in fact, scientists have no clue how this planet formed.

“Scientists say the heat from the two stars in the b Centauri system should work against the formation of new worlds or planets,” reports BGR. “Likewise, the sheer mass of the system should have a negative effect as well.”

After all, the two stars in b Centauri together are six to 10 times heavier than our solar system’s sun.

By now, you can probably tell why scientists are stumped. Meanwhile, creationists have no problem with this new planet!

Why? Because evolutionists and creationists have very different views regarding how planets originally formed.

How Evolutionists Say Planets Formed

According to the Bible, in the beginning was the Word (see John 1:1). But according to evolution, in the beginning was the Big Bang.

Evolution science books teach that the sun and planets in our solar system all formed together about 4.6 billion years ago out of the solar nebula, a cloud made of gas and dust. A nearby supernova apparently collapsed the solar nebular, forming the sun as well as the planets that orbit it … or so the theory goes.

As for other planets in our universe, the widely accepted idea is that they form out of a dense doughnut-shaped disk of gas and dust. As this disk circles around young stars, gravity and other forces cause masses within the disk to gradually grow as they gently collide and fuse. The masses keep growing until they become planets.

The problem with this theory is that it’s not observational science. No one has ever seen a planet form. Instead, this theory is based on historical science, which studies the past and is influenced by one’s worldview.

How the Bible Says Planets Formed

The Word of God has a much simpler explanation for how planets came to be—God made them!

According to Genesis 1:14-19, God created the sun, moon, stars, and other heavenly bodies on Day 4 of Creation Week.

Planets didn’t gradually form over millions of years. God spoke and they came into existence around 6,000 years ago.

So while this newly discovered planet’s current survival might make sense because of its wide orbit, the only reason it formed in the first place was that God created it.

Once again, we see that science doesn’t contradict God’s Word even though man’s interpretations often do. The Bible is trustworthy on all topics, including science.

Design in Astronomy

The Earth and its moon have many features that make our planet ideally suited for life. Is this a coincidence? No way! Scientists have discovered over 1,000 other planets, and none of them can support life. The more we study astronomy, the more we see the fingerprints of our Creator God.
