Do Aliens Exist? A Biblical Response to UFOs and Alien Abductions

do aliens exist

There are innumerable stars and galaxies beyond our planet. It’s breathtaking to think just how vast our universe really is. That same thought has caused many people to wonder: Do aliens exist?

“After all,” they reason, “if the universe is so vast and there are countless stars and planets, then surely life has to exist somewhere other than earth. What are the odds that, in this huge and complex expanse, we’re on the only planet that produces life?”

That’s a fair question—one that deserves a biblical answer.

Does the Bible Talk About Aliens?

At Answers in Genesis, you’ll learn that we don’t expect aliens to exist in outer space. Why? Because, simply put, the Bible provides no basis for extraterrestrial life.

The Bible doesn’t describe aliens. It talks about human beings, angels, demons, and the holy Trinity—but it doesn’t talk about any other beings that we could interpret to be aliens.

After all, the Bible tells us that Jesus came to Earth to save us from our sins, and it doesn’t mention Him giving that same treatment to any other planet. In fact, you see God’s heart and design for Earth and mankind (and His plan to save us through Jesus) existed before He even created the world.

Revelation 13:8 describes God’s plan for us existing even before the foundation of the Earth was laid. It says, “And all who dwell on earth will worship [the beast], everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.”

The Problem With Alien Theories

Many of those who believe in aliens also believe that those beings hold the secrets to life and advancement. They think an alien culture may hold the key to health and eternal life.

But what are the underlying assumptions for believing in aliens? Many believe that life arose on Earth spontaneously and evolved over billions of years into the complex organisms we see today.

They think that, if such an evolutionary process could happen on our planet, surely it can—and has—happened on other planets.

This view stands in contrast to what the Bible teaches. Instead of eons of evolution, the Bible tells us that God created the entire universe in six days. It also says He formed mankind in His image and gave us dominion over the Earth, to care for it and subdue it.

We don’t read of any such mandate given to other living beings. And we don’t see any evidence in God’s Word for sentient beings on other planets.

Do Aliens Exist on Mars?

Scientists have discovered frozen water and vapor on various planets, and they’ve even found liquid water flowing on Mars. Scientists get excited at those discoveries because liquid water is crucial for life to exist—nothing can survive without it.

As a result, many scientists scour planets in search of water. Their reasoning is that, if water and the right temperatures and organic compounds exist on another planet, life could exist there, too.

The problem with this thinking, though, is that life exists in only 12 percent of the volume of Earth where water exists, according to a study in the journal Astrobiology. One of the researchers behind that study, Eriita Jones, argued that “life and water are not equivalent” and that “there may be a lot of liquid water that is hostile to life.”

Starchild: Alien Skull … or Hoax?

In the 1930s, a teenage girl found two skeletons in a Mexican mine tunnel. The adult-sized skeleton had a normal-shaped skull while the child-sized skeleton had a misshapen skull.

In the 1990s, a paranormalist named Lloyd Pye came to own the misshapen skull and claimed it was from an alien-human hybrid. He pointed to Central and South American indigenous legends that tell of “star-beings” descending to earth to mate with indigenous women.

However, it is much more likely that the skull was that of a child with hydrocephalus or perhaps another rare disorder. After all, the skull had human mitochondrial DNA and its nuclear DNA revealed both X and Y chromosomes.

Alien Abductions and UFOs

Many supposed sightings of alien spaceships have been later identified as stars, weather balloons, or airplanes.

But some claims go beyond UFOs. Some people report that they’ve communicated with aliens and even been taken aboard spaceships. Even worse, some people claim aliens carried out bizarre investigations of their bodies that were often sexual in nature.

It’s most likely that at least some of the people making these claims simply made up their stories. Perhaps their motives are to get media attention or make a profit. Other alien stories could be the result of intense dreams or hallucinations.

Dr. Danny Faulkner points out that one interesting commonality in many of these abduction stories is spirituality. Many people reporting alien abductions also report indulging in occult or New Age practices.

Interestingly, you don’t find any born-again Christians among those claiming to have experienced alien abductions.

“In fact, many researchers have collected reports of alien abductions abruptly ending when abductees verbally mention the name of Jesus,” Faulkner says.

Aliens Can’t Provide Answers—Only Jesus Can

The truth is that there is no alien race or culture that can give us the keys to supreme wisdom and eternal life. Jesus Christ alone can do that—and He offers those very gifts to us through His death and resurrection.

Those who look to aliens for a hope beyond this life should instead look at Jesus and allow His hope to transform their hearts. That yearning for something more comes from a God-shaped hole that only the gospel can fill.
