Some Christians will tell you that they believe in evolution and the Bible. But when you study God’s Word, you see that evolution and the Bible don’t mix.
Christians might call it “Theistic evolution” or they may just try to fit millions of years into the Creation account. Whatever name you give it, it doesn’t change that these ideas stand opposed to the Bible.
How can we know this for sure? There are several reasons, which we will look at in this article.
The stark differences between evolutionary ideas and the principles in God’s Word are so stark that Bodie Hodge calls evolution “the religion of the day.”
Hodge, in fact, says he tried at one point to reconcile evolution and the Bible. After much study, he came to the conclusion that they couldn’t. After studying what the Word of God says about the beginning and Creation, he realized there was no way he could fit millions of years into the book of Genesis.
This leads us to the first reason evolution and the Bible don’t mix:
Millions of Years Don’t Fit in the Biblical Account of Creation
You have to take some strange leaps while interpreting the Bible to get millions of years into Genesis’ account of Creation. It simply doesn’t work.
When you read Genesis 1, you see the phrase “there was evening and there was morning” to describe each day of Creation. Clearly, this is not talking about ages of millions of years. This is talking about literal days and nights.
Jesus affirms this literal interpretation when he discusses marriage and divorce in Mark 10:6. He said: “But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’”
If evolution were true, then Adam and Eve would have appeared on the earth billions of years after the beginning of Creation, which evolutionists would call the “big bang.” How then, could God have made them male and female “from the beginning of the creation” as Jesus says?
But if God created Adam and Eve on Day 6 of Creation, then yes, male and female existed “from the beginning of the creation.”
Evolution Gets the Creation Order Wrong
Time isn’t the only reason evolution and the Bible don’t mix. Did you know that, according to evolutionary theory, stars evolved billions of years before the earth? But the Bible says God created the earth three whole days before He created the stars on Day 4.
And not only that, but evolution purports that dinosaurs evolved before birds. Yet Genesis 1 reveals that God created birds on Day 5 and dinosaurs—along with all land animals—on Day 6.
Lastly, let’s look at what evolution has to say about how the earth was made. Geological evolution teaches that the earth was a molten blob for millions of years before it cooled enough for water to collect.
Compare that to what the Bible says: God created the earth on Day 1, and it was covered with water (Genesis 1:1-2). On Day 3, God parted the waters to make land (Genesis 1:9). That doesn’t sound like a molten blob cooling down, does it? Of course not!
Death and Decay Before Adam and Eve?
In order for evolution to produce Adam and Eve, it would have taken millions of years of death, decay, and disease as natural selection ran its course.
But the Bible tells us that it was Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden that introduced death and suffering into this world. God warned Adam that eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil would bring him the curse of death.
“You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:16b-17).
Christians who believe in evolution argue that God was referring only to human death in this passage. Animal death, they say, was a regular occurrence before Adam and Eve were even created.
But this argument flies in the face of what Romans 8 says. The whole creation is suffering under the curse of death and disease until Jesus Christ returns.
“For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now” (Romans 8:19-22).
This passage makes it clear that creation does suffer under the curse because of Adam’s sin. Adam and his descendants were not the only victims of his rebellion.
There are more reasons that evolution and the Bible don’t mix beyond what we’ve listed in this article. But we hope these points are enough to help you see the drastic differences between evolution and God’s Word.
Now the question remains: Whose word will we trust? God’s or man’s?
