Skeptics often claim that archaeology contradicts God’s Word. But the more archaeologists discover, the more they realize biblical authors were correct in their descriptions of cities and historical events. It’s undeniable—archaeology supports the Bible!
Here are just a few ways that archaeological finds confirm what we see in Scripture:
Dead Sea Scrolls Fill a Major Gap in History of Biblical Text
Who knew that something as simple as throwing a stone could lead to one of the most amazing finds in archaeology!
In 1947, a Bedouin tossed a rock into a cave and heard pottery shatter. When he looked inside, he found ancient scrolls. Over the next few years, researchers found around 900 manuscripts—200 of which were portions of the Bible! These are called the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Before this discovery, the oldest Old Testament manuscripts were said to have been written around A.D. 900. But the Dead Sea Scrolls were dated 250 B.C. to A.D. 68, making them the oldest existing documents we have that confirm Scripture.
What’s even more amazing is that the biblical scrolls are a very close match to the Masoretic Text tradition (which is what modern Hebrew and English Bibles are based on). This confirms that the Old Testament text has been faithfully and carefully preserved over thousands of years.
Archaeological Evidence That Ancient Man Was Smart
You’ve surely seen the classic trope in movies and comics—a primitive caveman walking around on all fours whose only form of communication is pounding their chest and grunting.
It’s easy for secularists to look at today’s modern technology and assume humans are much smarter now than they used to be, thanks to evolution. And sadly, even many Christians adhere to this evolutionary idea.
But according to God’s Word, some of the earliest humans were doing extraordinary things:
Adam and Eve’s son Cain built a city (see Genesis 4:17).
Tubal-Cain, one of Cain’s descendants, made all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron (see Genesis 4:22).
Jubal, another of Cain’s descendants, was an accomplished musician and likely made stringed instruments and pipes (see Genesis 4:21).
And don’t forget that around 4,500 years ago, Noah and his sons built a boat large enough to hold their families and at least two of every animal kind.
Pastor Don Landis and a team of researchers have found archaeological evidence from around the world that shows how ancient people were smart and creative. (They published their findings in a book titled The Genius of Ancient Man if you want to learn more.)
Did ancient people have smartphones and airplanes? Most likely not! But that doesn’t mean they weren’t smart and sophisticated—a far cry from the primitive brute most people imagine.
Discoveries Confirm Biblical Descriptions of Ancient Cities
Archaeological excavations reveal cities that closely match how the Bible describes them.
For example, you might recognize the name Ziklag, a Philistine city mentioned in the Old Testament. During King Saul’s time, the Philistines occupied Ziklag, but King Achish of Gath gave the city to David as a gift later on.
In 1 Samuel 30, we learn that the Amalekites burned the city to the ground. David and his men managed to recover the spoils and defeat the Amalekites, but the damage to the city was already done. As a result, he and his army most likely had to rebuild the town.
An excavation of the ancient site (also called Khirbet al-Ra’I) in 2015 through 2018 reveals that building stone was reused. It also showed that the rebuilding was only about a tenth of the size of the original city. This confirms what Scripture says happened!
Over and over, archaeology proves what the Bible has been saying for thousands of years. We can trust the Bible’s authority!
