Is the Multiverse Real?

Science fiction books, movies, and TV shows have long used the multiverse as a fascinating plot point. The most recent example is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought this idea to the forefront of mainstream conversation once again.

Although the idea of infinite parallel universes makes for an entertaining story, is the multiverse real? And even more importantly, is the idea biblical?

We’ll analyze these questions through the lens of science and the Bible. But first, let’s look at what the multiverse theory is.

What Is the Multiverse?

The multiverse is the idea that our universe is just one of many parallel universes. These universes can have many differences and similarities, but they all supposedly exist simultaneously and independently of one another.

According to this theory, there are an infinite number of universes. And since no two universes are the same, there would be many different changes in physical constants, writes Dr. Danny Faulkner. As a result, in most of these universes, life would not be possible.

This is partially why people believe in the multiverse theory, Dr. Faulkner explains. You see, many in the scientific community understand that life in our universe and on our planet is only possible because of very specific physical parameters. Even the tiniest changes to those parameters would make life absolutely impossible.

Of course, this intricacy implies that our universe was designed just as the Bible tells us. But according to an evolutionary worldview (which claims that random processes drive nature forward), it simply doesn’t make sense that our universe would have the exact parameters it needs to create and sustain life.

That’s where the multiverse comes in to save the day. The idea that infinite universes exist makes the odds of life in our universe much more believable to evolutionists.

The Scientific Problem with the Multiverse Theory

It’s one thing to watch a movie that involves a multiverse. We can enjoy these entertaining stories because we know they’re not real.

But it’s another thing entirely to claim the multiverse is real. Although most arguments for the multiverse sound scientific, they’re anything but that.

The main scientific problem with the multiverse is that it’s impossible to prove. And if something can’t be proven or observed, then it’s not science! After all, science is using our five senses to study the natural world.

Instead, the multiverse falls into the category of metaphysics, something discussed and studied from a philosophical perspective. In other words, it’s an abstract theory that isn’t grounded in reality.

As Dr. Faulkner says, “Belief in the multiverse is a desperate attempt to avoid the implications of design even when design is staring us in the face. Arguments for the multiverse often are couched in pseudoscientific terms to make it sound scientific.”

The Biblical Problem with the Multiverse Theory

The multiverse stems from an evolutionary and secular worldview. It’s a way to account for the incredible precision we see in our universe without giving God credit.

But the Bible tells us that Jesus, not chance processes, created this universe and continues to sustain it. Colossians 1:16-17 makes this truth abundantly clear:

“For by [Jesus] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Could God have created multiple universes? Well, sure, He could have. He’s all-powerful! But there’s not even a hint of such a notion in the Bible. And again, it’s important to remember that the very concept of the multiverse came out of a desperate attempt to explain away the undeniable design of our universe.

Why accept an illogical theory when the truth is staring us right in the face? Our universe sustains life because Jesus designed it that way.
